Shops at Mission Village Hosts Summer Stroll

The Shops at Mission Village hosted its first annual Summer Stroll last week. Families walked along Mission Street in San Marino, shopped after hours, and enjoyed food trucks and live music stationed along the street.
Participating shops, salons and eateries had special offers, light bites and refreshments, including the Cub House Bike Shop, David Orgell, Heatherbloom, Jarbo Collection, J. McLaughlin, Johnny Was, Julienne, Lexington Place, Mark Taylor Salon, Miss L Fire, The Monogrammed Home, Nick Boswell Photography, Pearls, A Place to Bead, P.M. Jacoy Menswear, Port O’Call, San Marino Café & Marketplace, Serafina, Simply Fresh, Single Stone, Starr House the Salon and Tocco Finale.
All participating merchants donated a portion of the evening’s proceeds to Cancer Support Community of Pasadena. Cancer support programs and services are offered free of charge to individuals facing cancer, including their families and friends.
Also honored will be Mijares Mexican Restaurant with the Corporate Angel Award. Mijares is Pasadena’s oldest Mexican restaurant known for its authentic regional and traditional cuisine, famous margaritas and festive patio dining. In existence for more than 97 years, Mijares is a landmark and continues to be owned and operated by Alice Mijares (daughter of founder Jesucita Mijares), R-lene Mijares DeLang, Tom Recendez and Tina Jimenez. The restaurant is a longstanding, generous supporter of CSCP and many other important causes and organizations in the Greater Pasadena area.
The emcee will be KNBC-4’s Fritz Coleman.
Angel Gala raises money for Cancer Support Community Pasadena, which provides free services to cancer patients and their family members, including professionally led support groups, educational workshops and mind-body programs. More than 1,000 people walked through CSCP’s doors in 2017, and the organization expects to serve even more this year with expanding programs.
“We are all very excited to honor the Mgrublians and Mijares. They have been extremely generous and supportive of CSCP for many years and were the obvious choice of honorees,” said CSCP Board President Michael Healy.
“The Angel Gala is our largest fundraiser of the year and raises vital funds that allow us to provide free programs to people facing cancer. We are grateful, too, to the amazing and hilarious Fritz Coleman for being our emcee,” said CSCP Executive Director Meg Symes.
Approximately 350 guests are expected to attend. Tickets are $250 with all proceeds going to CSCP. Tickets are available for purchase on the Cancer Support Community Pasadena website cscpasadena.org. The co-chairs of the gala are Melissa Alcorn, Clay Marquardt and Lydia Valenta.
Cancer Support Community Elects New Board Members

Cancer Support Community Pasadena has elected two new members — local residents Alison Gamble and Clay Marquardt — to serve on its board of directors.
“Alison and Clay are outstanding business leaders in our community, and they are passionate about improving the lives of people facing cancer,” said CSCP Board President Michael Healy. We are confident that they will add great value to our board.”
Gamble, a graduate of University of San Diego, is president of Gamble Jones Investment Counsel located in Pasadena. She joined the firm in 1993, became a portfolio manager in 1995, and a principal in the firm in 1998. She has served as president of the firm since 2011. Gamble is also an Advisory Board member of the Pasadena Community Foundation. In addition, she serves on the board of trustees at Mayfield Junior School and will be the board chair effective July 1.
Gamble and husband Mark reside in Altadena and have two children, Matthew, 14, and Grace, 12. She enjoys playing tennis, traveling (especially in their RV) and reading. “I was honored to be asked to join the CSCP board as this organization has a special place for my husband and me,” said Gamble. “My husband served on the board back in the late ’90s and this was my opportunity to serve this amazing organization that gives so much support to those dealing with cancer.”
Marquardt, returning to the board for his second term, is a financial adviser in Pasadena. With more than 37 years of experience in financial services, Marquardt has developed investment strategies for individuals and families targeted to their specific needs and goals. A graduate of Rollins College, Marquardt lives in Pasadena with his wife, Betsy Snyder, an Emmy award-winning television producer. They have two adult children, Charlie and Anne. In his spare time, Marquardt loves to fly fish.
“I’m excited to rejoin CSCP to help us continue to provide a community where cancer patients, their families, and loved ones can receive the support they need free of charge,” said Marquardt. “I love working with the people at CSCP and have seen the difference we can make in people’s lives. I really want to see that continue and am happy to be a small part of this great organization.”

Cancer Support Community’s Poker Night Yields Jackpot

Cancer Support Community Pasadena recently held its eighth annual Poker Bowl at the Flying A Garage, a private collection of classic automobiles. The event, which included a cocktail hour, dinner, a raffle, craps, blackjack and a Texas Hold ’Em poker tournament, raised more than $48,000 for CSCP’s programs. The group’s mission is to ensure that all people affected by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community.

Cancer Support Community Angel Gala Sparkles

Cancer Support Community Pasadena’s 26th annual Angel Gala “Black, White and Bling” was a success, with more than 300 guests in attendance last Saturday night. The gala, CSCP’s largest annual fundraiser, raised more than $331,000 for CSCP’s programs. Guests were dressed in glittering attire that added to the radiant and brilliant atmosphere.
The tireless work of Gala committee chairs Melissa Alcorn, Clay Marquardt and Lydia Valenta, along with the entire Angel Gala Committee, made for a fun and festive event. This year, CSCP recognized Margaret and David Mgrublian and Mijares Restaurant as Angel Award recipients for their generous contributions and support of CSCP. The organization’s participant Rabbi Susan Goldberg spoke about her family’s experience at CSCP, noting that “we are all in the wilderness in this life yet we found community at CSCP.”
“We thank our donors for keeping CSCP at the top of their charitable giving, year after year. Without their annual support, CSCP would not be able to take care of people in our community who are facing an incredible challenge –– cancer,” said Meg Symes, CSCP’s executive director.

Young Adults Get Warmth, Care at Cancer Support Community

When 33-year-old Jennifer O’Mahony was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer a year ago, it wasn’t so much a life interrupted. It was a life under siege.
Four years married and in the upswing of a hard-fought career in fashion design, the Oklahoma native and her husband, Ryan, had moved from the bustling Hollywood neighborhood to settle down in Pasadena. They planned to have a family soon, and a dog, maybe sooner. They were prudent, renting first, before plunging into the crazy real estate market. They priced homes in Altadena.
And then O’Mahony had a grand mal seizure one night while watching TV with Ryan by her side, and lost consciousness.
“It came out of nowhere … they took me to Huntington Hospital ER where they started running every test under the sun,” she recalled. Continue reading
Specialist to Speak at Cancer Support Community Pasadena

Dr. John Link, one of the world’s leading breast cancer specialists and author of “The Breast Cancer Survival Manual,” now in its fifth edition, will speak at Cancer Support Community Pasadena on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, and the first 50 attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Link’s book.
Link established one of the first comprehensive breast care centers in the United States based on his innovative “optimal care” model. By using this model, which incorporates all aspects of screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up within a single medical environment, thousands of his patients have benefitted over the last 30 years. Women are provided with individualized care tailored to their unique cancer situation using a team approach.
As pointed out by Link, “By understanding the risks and benefits of different treatment options, women will feel confident in the choices they make. I have had the privilege to care for women with breast cancer for more than three decades and have seen the cure rate increase from 55% to close to 90%.”

Mayfield athletes, Boosters score big win in service to others

The gym was packed, school spirit could not have been higher and the work of our student-run Athletic Leadership Council scored a huge victory for Mayfield.
It was 104 degrees in the shade—and we were having a BBQ. The freshmen, JV and Varsity volleyball teams were geared up for big games—and we lost. Plus, it wasn’t exactly prime time for a party—a school night for students and a blazing rush hour commute for parents.
None of that mattered.
After weeks of planning, Mayfield’s student-run Athletic Leadership Council and the Booster Club pulled off their wildly successful "Dig Pink" fundraiser and spirit match—a non-league volleyball game against Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy to raise money for the Cancer Support Community, Pasadena.
By the end of the evening every person in the standing-room-only gym claimed victory, thanks to the energetic vision of Mayfield students under the guidance of Athletic Director Lynda Gilbert and the Booster Club.
We raised more than $2,500 for the cancer support group. We also welcomed our FSHA friends to our beautiful campus for a game that showcased the skills of both teams.
“We couldn't have imagined anything better. We poured our heart and soul into the event, and it was awesome seeing so many girls from all grade levels supporting the Cubs,” said Kat Lopez ’18, one of the student leaders. “Okay, maybe winning the game would've been nice, but everything was so much more than that! It was a win-win for everyone!”
Head of School Kate Morin acknowledged our generous donors who contributed to new gym air conditioning and renovations, giving special thanks to our Mayfield "Champions," the Mayfield Booster Club, the Francis H. Clougherty Charitable Trust and the John and Dorothy Shea Foundation, who provided the leadership support for the gym project. A banner thanking all donors of $1,000 or more now hangs above the student section in the Sr. Mary Wilfrid Gymnasium.
Meg Symes, Executive Director of the local Cancer Support Community Pasadena, attended the game and said her organization was “so honored” to be the beneficiary of the donation, which she said will go a long way toward serving the needs of people with cancer and their families.
The mother of two Mayfield alums, Katherine ’06 and Sarah ’08, Mrs. Symes had not visited campus for several years. She said she was “blown away” by the Mayfield school spirit and sense of unity.
“Clearly, the girls are happy; Mayfield is thriving,” she said. “I am so grateful for all of this.”
Our students had sold pink cancer awareness t-shirts in advance and charged $5 admission to the game with all profits going to the cancer support group. Through the generosity of the Boosters (and the stamina of the dads behind the fiery grill), students ate for free, adding to the festivities.
In one poignant scene during the Varsity game former FHSA player Katherine Lund, who was forced to retire from volleyball after multiple concussions, joined her younger sister on the court to serve the first point of the match.
On Mayfield’s side of the net, Mrs. Gilbert and players exchanged emotional moments as they honored departing senior teammates.
With the mission-driven bonds of Catholic, all-girls education uniting FSHA and Mayfield, the event also showcased how girls working together for good are a force that can’t be stopped, Mrs. Morin said.
“There was something so special about this event that is will stay with us for a long time,” Mrs. Morin said. “The energy of our two schools together was exceptionally incredible. I am so glad that we could use this game to come together as sister Catholic schools.”
It felt like a reunion of sorts in the bleachers and at the BBQ.
“When FSHA arrived it was so wonderful to watch. All the girls knew each other because they have played club sports together or they go to the same parish or went to elementary school together,” said Mrs. Gilbert. “They were hugging and high-fiving each other.”
When the buzzer sounded and balls soared, the grit and talent of our athletes impressed those in the crowd whose raucous cheering left many hoarse days later.
The FHSA varsity team won 4/1 (28/26; 25/21; 23/25; 27/25) in a highly competitive match against Mayfield volleyball team, which is headed to the Prep League playoffs.
Mrs. Gilbert said that the subtext of the game and the work of the Athletic Leadership Council furthers one of Mrs. Morin’s initiatives that calls on Mayfield educators to work toward deeply developing our students as young women leaders of faith and service.
“I am so proud of the athletic council for just really working together and making this beyond successful,” Mrs. Gilbert said. “I am more proud of the Varsity team for the way they played. The game could have gone either way and our Cubs never once gave up the fight!”
For Kat, event co-chair Lauren Lo Coco ’18 and their fellow athletic council members, the event stands as a formative lesson that will stay with them for a lifetime.
“It shows how active young women are in our society,” Kat said. “It was wonderful that FSHA joined us for this event. It made it all that more meaningful.”
New Board Members Join Cancer Support Community

Cancer Support Community Pasadena recently elected three new members — Megan Reed, Bradley Talt and Charles Wood — to serve on its board of directors.
“I am excited to welcome them to the board of directors,” said Michael Healy, president of the organization’s board. “Each of them brings a passion for the work of CSCP and a desire to continue to strengthen our programs and services for individuals facing cancer.”
Reed currently serves as the executive director of the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation, which provides programs and services to at-risk youth in 17 youth centers throughout Los Angeles County. In 2013, Reed served as campaign manager for the Rose Bowl Legacy Connections Campaign, for the renovation of the Rose Bowl Stadium. A 1985 graduate of the University of Virginia, Reed lives in Pasadena and has three children, Chase, Blake and Lindsay. “As a breast cancer survivor, I am eager to serve on CSCP’s board to help expand our reach and enhance our programs for individuals impacted by cancer,” said Reed.
Talt joined CB Richard Ellis in 1983, where he built his career in the commercial real estate arena. During his nearly 20-year tenure at the company, Talt focused on brokerage, shopping center development and asset management. In 2002, he formed B.A.T. Ventures to develop and hold commercial retail properties. B.A.T. Ventures also co-owns and manages 139 apartment units in Anaheim along with an industrial park. In addition, Talt provides consulting services on shopping centers and retail properties. He and his wife, Susie, live in Pasadena and have three adult children, Taylor, Justin and Amy. “I am very excited to serve on the CSCP Board as its mission and goals of serving those affected by cancer are so wonderful and enriching,” remarked Talt.
Wood, a finance professional and educator, returns to the board for his second term. He began his career in corporate finance at First Boston and Credit-Suisse First Boston in 1976. Wood founded C.E. Peterson & Co. in 1989 where he advised on a broad range of corporate issues until retiring in 2011. Wood has more than 30 years of nonprofit experience in Los Angeles County, serving as a consultant to and director of several local organizations, including the Tournament of Roses Association, AAF Rose Bowl Aquatic Center, House Ear Institute and Center for Community & Family Services. “I am delighted to return to Wellness. Since cancer touches each and every one of us in one way or another, I am hopeful my service to CSCP will help enhance the comfort and caring of our wonderful staff.”

PCF Grant Helps Cancer Support Community with Move to New Offices

When Licia (pictured left)was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2005, she had no idea how to deal with her illness. “I was just starting treatment, my friends and family were frightened for me, my husband had died of cancer, and I was truly scared,” said Licia.
A friend of Licia told her about the Cancer Support Community Pasadena (CSCP), so she went. “The team at CSCP very carefully started to direct me towards hope. I needed education, and at CSCP I was able to meet with trained therapists, as well as patients going through similar circumstances. The team at CSCP provided the information I needed regarding my medical choices, and I became an informed patient advocate, able to make better decisions. With the help of my support group, I was slowly moving beyond my fears.”
A couple of years later, Licia returned to CSCP to be part of the survivorship community. In addition to support groups, CSCP offers more than a hundred educational workshops and stress management classes each month, including art, yoga, and even bead making. Licia became a substitute yoga class instructor for CSCP and continues to be involved with the organization as a volunteer and a fundraiser.
The Cancer Support Community Pasadena provides emotional support and guidance for patients like Licia, as well as their families and caregivers, to help them better deal with cancer. They have proven that getting people actively involved in dealing with their cancer will improve the quality of their life. All programs are free of charge, and nearly 1,000 people in the Pasadena area come to CSCP each year. The Pasadena Community Foundation recently awarded a Capital Grant to Cancer Support to support a move to their new location at 76 East Del Mar Blvd., Suite 215. These new offices provide more space for their programs and greater comfort for their clients.

Cancer Support Community Receives Taper Grant
Cancer Support Community Pasadena has received a $50,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The Foundation, founded in 1989, is a private family organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of people’s lives by supporting nonprofits and their work in the communities.
“We are thrilled to be the recipient of such a generous grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation,” said Meg Symes, CSCP’s executive director. “This grant provides our organization with valuable general operating support, allowing us to expand and strengthen our programs and services for individuals impacted by cancer. We are grateful to the S. Mark Taper Foundation for appreciating the importance of our mission and for helping us to further our mission.”
The Foundation awards annual grants through a competitive application and review process. CSCP provides 100 monthly education and stress management classes and workshops, in addition to 11 distinct weekly support groups that give patients, family and friends/caregivers, children and those bereaved coping skills and a safe environment in which to express their feelings and connect with others undergoing similar experiences. Program participants are invited to attend one support group per week and unlimited stress management classes and educational workshops. All support groups are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals and are offered free of charge.

Cancer Support Community Holds 25th Annual Angel Gala
The 25th annual Angel Gala, “Bright Lights, Big City” benefitting Cancer Support Community Pasadena, was held recently at downtown Los Angeles’ City Club and brought in record-breaking revenue of $373,000 and was attended by 370 guests. The event featured a reception with auctions, dinner, entertainment by Nina Lares and the Calvillo Sisters.
Elizabeth Rusnak Arizmendi and the Rusnak Auto Group were honored with Angel Awards for their generous and consistent support throughout the years.
“The generosity that evening was contagious and one special guest, Paul Rusnak of the Rusnak Auto Group, made a surprise announcement of a matching gift challenge of $100,000. We are thrilled and will work diligently to raise funds for the match. Untold participants will benefit from the success of this event and the generosity of all our guests,” said Meg Symes, executive director.
Fritz Coleman was the emcee. Guests were moved by the personal stories of Dallas Raines, Angie Everhart, Wendy Burch, CSCP member Bill Brummel as well as the honorees, Elizabeth Rusnak Arizmendi and her father, Paul Rusnak.
The organization provides free services to cancer patients and their family members. It includes professionally led support groups, educational workshops and mind-body programs that depend heavily on funds raised by the annual Angel Gala. CSCP touches more than 2,000 people in the greater Pasadena community annually.
“We are all so grateful for all the work our co-chairs Kal Balian Antoun, Elizabeth Arnett, Dana Rodriquez and the committee put in to plan this record-breaking evening,” said CSCP Board President Michael Healy.

The seventh annual Poker Bowl Tournament will be held on Friday, June 23, at the Flying A Garage in support of Cancer Support Community, Pasadena. More than 150 guests are expected to attend the event and will play Texas Hold’em and Blackjack surrounded by a private collection of antique and perfectly restored automobiles, owned by car collectors Valerie and Aaron Weiss. Dinner will be provided by Son of a Bun and Tacos Chihuahua food trucks, and dessert will be provided by Nothing Bundt Cakes.
Prizes include Dodger tickets, UCLA/Stanford football game tickets and hotel accommodations, Disneyland Park Hopper passes, four Hollywood Bowl tickets and a $1,000 American Express gift card. “LNO was a fun evening filled with laughter and celebrating friendships. We had incredible auction items and prizes, and everyone enjoyed shopping and playing games for a wonderful cause”, affirms Danielle Gay, CSCP Events Coordinator. “The revenue from the event will touch the lives of so many people,” Gay added.

Cancer Support Community Pasadena will host its seventh annual Ladies Night Out, an evening of entertainment, laughter and commemoration, on Thursday, Oct. 5. The celebratory benefit was created to honor the courageous women in the community who have been touched by cancer. The event will be tiki themed and take place at Pasadena’s concert venue “The Rose.” The evening’s events will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Rusnak Auto Group Donates $100,000 to Cancer Support Community

Cancer Support Community Pasadena recently received an unprecedented $100,000 matching gift from Rusnak Auto Group. Paul Rusnak, founder of Rusnak Auto Group, had announced a matching challenge of $100,000 at CSCP’s annual gala five months ago.
“We are incredibly grateful to Paul for his tremendous generosity,” said Meg Symes, CSCP’s executive director. “This was an incredible opportunity for CSCP. We got to work promoting this amazing matching opportunity and our donors rose to the occasion. In three months, more than 250 individual donors raised more than $100,000 and Paul sent CSCP a generous matching check.
“Paul, his daughter Liz Rusnak Arizmendi, and the entire Rusnak family are setting the stage for a new level of philanthropy for the women, men and children CSCP serves who are facing cancer. This match clearly inspired many others to join in supporting CSCP; we thank Paul, Liz, Rusnak Auto Group, and all of our donors who met this remarkable matching opportunity for appreciating CSCP’s mission.”
Founded in 1990, Cancer Support Community Pasadena is a nonprofit organization providing support groups, educational workshops and stress management classes to individuals affected by cancer. CSCP is located at 76 E. Del Mar Blvd., Suite 215, in Pasadena. All programs are offered free of charge to cancer patients and their families, friends and caregivers.

Poker Bowl Hits Jackpot for Cancer Support Community
Cancer Support Community-Pasadena recently held its seventh annual Poker Bowl at the Flying A Garage, which houses a private collection of American classic automobiles owned by Aaron and Valerie Weiss. More than 180 guests — a new record for attendance — enjoyed socializing over burgers and tacos outdoors before heading inside for an evening of poker and blackjack, raising more than $52,000. Prizes for the winners were generously donated by supporters, and all of the money raised will go toward CSC’s programs providing free support, education and hope to anyone facing cancer.

Cancer Support Community Honors Farrah Fawcett Foundation

Cancer Support Community Pasadena recently celebrated the official naming of the Farrah Fawcett Group Room in its facility with a naming ceremony. Farrah Fawcett started the Farrah Fawcett Foundation in 2007, after being diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006. She died June 25, 2009. The foundation funds research for HPV-related cancers, promotes awareness and cancer prevention strategies, and provides patient assistance funds to help those struggling with the expenses of treatment.
“We are so grateful for the foundation’s generous grant to CSCP, and so pleased to have this beautiful new partnership,” remarked Meg Symes, CSCP’s executive director. “We are both organizations working to provide education, support and hope to individuals facing a cancer.”
The evening began with a presentation from David Kessler, board member of the Farrah Fawcett Foundation and expert and bestselling author on death, grieving and healing. More than 60 people attended. After Kessler’s presentation, Symes and CSCP Board President Michael Healy officially dedicated Group Room #2 as the Farrah Fawcett Room. As a tribute to the late Fawcett, the room was decorated with orchids, which were her favorite flower.
Alana Stewart, president of the foundation, spoke of her friendship with Fawcett and how pleased the late actress would have been to see the foundation’s resources supporting CSCP’s endeavors.
